Initially, in 1968, the Macedon Garden Club was established when Connie Raven organized a neighborhood club of interested friends & neighbors. Although not federated, meetings were patterned after the Federated clubs. Officers were elected, minutes were kept and a set of by-laws was made. As a result of their interest in ecology and gardening, and with the encouragement of member Jane Salisbury, they decided to apply to the Federation for membership. It was approved in August 1970 and by 1971 the group, which numbered 27, was officially operating as a member of Federated Garden Clubs of N.Y.S., Inc. Projects, program, etc. were set up to reflect the new interests and concerns and the theme of the Club Yearbook for 1971 was "Concern for the Environment."
In these early years, the Macedon Garden Club became interested in its own town's civic beautification. Flower boxes and flowerbeds were placed at the Macedon Library and Post Office. With the approval of the town, the club was instrumental in landscaping and maintaining a great part of Samuel's Park (now Gravino Park) for the enjoyment of all the citizens. Through the years, our involvement has grown as we have also participated in plantings on Main Street, at the new Macedon Town Complex, the Village Park, Bullis Park, and whenever a request has been received from town officials.
Annual scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who are entering the field of horticulture or related field. Club member Penny Frederick drew up and initiated a nature center at the Macedon Elementary School - a place for students to learn about nature, ecology and cooperation. Joan Pfeil has been in charge of our Garden Therapy projects for many years as we provide valentine tray favors for nursing home residents and "Meals on Wheels" participants. We also have an "Adopt-A-Family” project at Christmas time as well as regularly contribute to the Town's food pantry.
The Macedon Garden Club has been an active contributor to the District through club members serving on Executive Board, as Section Chairperson, Committee Chairperson-particularly with the Heralds and Special Events, as Yearbook Judges, and as the regular provider of lunches for District events. Our member, Pat Cargnoni, served as Seventh District Director and New York State President, and various State and National positions.
We are looking forward to new goals and aspirations. Again we reflect on our many accomplishments and achievements and continue to support our community, our club and each other.
